The Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ occupy a unique place in Islamic history, but how does the Quran itself describe them? This course examines the Quranic portrayal of the first generation of Muslims, exploring the qualities, virtues, struggles, and spiritual transformations that distinguished them as the community entrusted with carrying the final revelation.

This course explores the Signs of the Hour (Ashrāṭ al-Sāʿah) through the Quran, Sunnah, and the classical scholarly tradition. Students will study both the minor and major signs foretold by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, examining how moral, social, political, and spiritual transformations signal the approach of the Final Hour.

This course offers a practical introduction to the rulings and principles that shape a Muslim woman’s daily religious life. Drawing from the juridical expertise of the Hanafi school of thought, students will study the fiqh of menstruation, purity, prayer, fasting, marriage, family life, and other everyday matters that frequently arise in the lives of Muslim women. By connecting classical scholarship to contemporary realities, the course equips women with practical guidance and a deeper appreciation for the wisdom of Islamic law.

This course traces the deep roots of a Perso-Islamic intellectual tradition and examines how it shaped Muslim thought, culture, and institutions far beyond Iran’s geographic borders. Rather than treating Iran as a nation-state, we approach it as a civilizational space, one whose influence on Islamic history has been profound and largely underappreciated.

This course offers an engaging exploration of the Farewell Sermon (Khutbat al-Wada’) delivered by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his final pilgrimage. More than a historical address, the sermon presents enduring guidance on justice, human dignity, ethics, social responsibility, and community life. Through close study of the sermon’s themes, students will examine topics such as the sanctity of life and wealth, economic fairness, family and interpersonal rights, equality among people, and the foundations of a principled society.
Mawlana Asif Uddin, Mawlana Umar Ahmad

The course introduces students to the main tenets of Islamic creed. The course also addresses modern theological trends and how a Muslim should address them, merging the content they learn with the context in which they live. The aim is to leave students with love of divine knowledge and a confident understanding of their creed in the contemporary world.
Dr Muhammed Stodolsky, Mawlana Atiq Taiyab

This course explores how Greek philosophy entered the Muslim world, the questions it raised, and the diverse responses it inspired. Students will be introduced to key themes such as reason and revelation, logic, metaphysics, ethics, and the nature of knowledge, while tracing the development of these discussions through the works of influential Muslim thinkers including al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, al-Ghazali, Ibn al-ʿArabi, and Ibn Rushd. Particular attention will be given to how Muslim scholars engaged Greek ideas critically—adopting some concepts, refining others, and challenging those that conflicted with Islamic teachings.
Dr. Mohammed Pervaiz

This course traces the first three hundred years of Ottoman history, from a small Turkish principality on the edge of the Byzantine world to one of the most powerful empires in human history. Along the way, we will wrestle with a central question: what made the Ottomans different? Why did this dynasty, among dozens of competing Turkic states, become the dominant force in Muslim political life in the early modern world? A major focus will be the Ottoman understanding of khilafah and how sultans conceived of their religious authority, and how that differed from earlier dynasties like the Umayyads and Abbasids.

What Students Say About the MARS Learning Experience
Alhamdulillah, enrolling in Mufti Hisham’s course MARS 103-H has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Mufti Saheb’s calm, patient, and encouraging manner creates a safe space where students feel truly comfortable asking questions—even on sensitive, real-life fiqh challenges.
What stood out most was how many sisters felt confident discussing their everyday struggles openly. That level of trust is rare and so valuable.
