Arabic And The Instrumental Islamic Sciences

The Department of Arabic equips students with the necessary tools to engage the original sources of Islamic scholarship, and develops their communicative abilities to facilitate their participation in current debates.

The Sunnah of Allah which is sending prophets and revealing books existed in the past with one common characteristic between all of them; “We did not send a messenger except that he spoke the language of his people so that he may explain waḥī (lit. revelation) to them.”

Hadith

Mawlana Bilal Ali, Chair

The Department of Hadith at Darul Qasim College offers an intellectually rigorous and spiritually grounded approach to one of the most vital disciplines of the Islamic tradition. Our goal is to prepare students for a serious and contextually meaningful engagement with the Sunnah of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, through the transmission, preservation, and interpretation of ḥadīth literature.

Islamic Law

Mufti Hisham Dawood, Chair

Department of Islamic Law teaches fiqh (lit. understanding) which Abū Ḥanīfah, the founder of the earliest and largest Islamic legal school, has defined as knowledge of one’s rights and responsibilities (معرفة النفس ما لها وما عليها). Fiqh is an extensive field of knowledge that consists of two main disciplines: Furū’ al-fiqh(legal rulings) and Uṣūl al-fiqh (legal methodology). The department aims to give the student firm grounding in the furū’ and uṣūl of one of the four schools of Sunni law to enable them to do research in all legal fields.

Theology

Dr. Muhammed Volkan Yildiran Stodolsky, Chair

The Department of Theology teaches ‘ilm uṣūl al-­dīn (lit. the knowledge of the roots of the religion), also called al­-Kalām (lit. the discourse), which is a discipline of learning by which one is able to establish religious truths with evidence and remove doubts from these truths.

Humanities

The Humanities Department aims to give students the tools to understand and engage the Western academic tradition at an advanced level. Students are exposed to a variety of fields within the humanities, including history, philosophy, logic, and writing.

Islamic History

The Department of Islamic History is a welcome addition to an already robust Dars-e-Niẓāmī curriculum. The department focuses on the life-events of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Ṣaḥābah (May Allah be pleased with them) as presented through primary and secondary Islamic History literature.
