The talk attempts to analyze the modern Thematic Tafsīr works and how this Tafsīr has been used as a method to reconstruct Muslim tradition. By analyzing its trajectory, the talk attempts to trace its sanad, tools, figures and how the Tafsīr found its way to the traditional Muslim institutions. 

Biography:

Issam Eido is an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Religious Studies and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Religious Studies at Vanderbilt University. He was affiliated with the Harvard Program in Islamic Law through MESA Global Academy 2022-2023. A former visiting scholar of Islamic and Arabic Studies at The University of Chicago-Divinity School (2013-2015). In 2012, he was a Fellow of the “Europe in the Middle East/Middle East in Europe” Research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin (affiliated with Corpus Coranicum). Prior to the Syrian uprising, He served as a lecturer in the faculty of Islamic Studies in the Department of Qur’ān and Hadith Studies at the University of Damascus. He is a student of a number of prominent shyukh including Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shāghūrī, Shaykh Abū al-Ḥasan al-Kurdī, Shaykh Nūr al-Dīn ʿItr, and Shaykh Muḥammad ʿAwwāma.
