The hadith and sīrah are necessary to understand the Quran. In this lecture:
- the happenings at Hudaybiyyah
- the dream
- a definition of true victory
- seeking forgiveness
- perpetual versus short-term benefit
- the toolkit for the rightly guided
Summary: If we don’t understand ḥādīth and sīrah, we can’t properly understand the Qurʾān. Ḥudaybiyyah is one such example. The Prophet ﷺ had a dream that he and Ṣaḥābah were going to perform Umrah. But, when they went to perform ‘umrah, they were stopped by Qur’aysh. The Prophet ﷺ agreed to what seemed to some Ṣaḥābah as unfair terms in the treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah . This treaty tested the degrees of the Ṣaḥābah unflinching allegiance to the command of the Prophet ﷺ, where some Ṣaḥābah had some difficulty initially acquiescing to the terms and command. Allah ﷻ declared and affirmed this is indeed a victory at the beginning of Sūrah al-Fatḥ, where this victory led to the victory over Qur’aysh in Mecca and over the external superpowers of the time like the Persians and Romans. Ḥudaybiyyah reminds us of the need to appreciate Allah and His Prophet’s foresight for perpetual versus short-term benefit.
