It is true that intention is what decides the outcome, even in scholarship. In fact we can say that especially in scholarship. Dr. Khaled will share three incidents, two that are very famous in Islamic history (the Killing of ʿUthmān and the Battle of the Camel) and another that is from a ḥadīth (about field dogs), to show that the intent of the scholar/historian has a direct impact on the outcome of the analysis of these varied incidents. Thus, it is very important to understand the intention of the scholars, especially modern ones, when we are looking at Islamic history.
ABOUT DR. KHALED KESHK
Dr. Khaled Keshk serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at DePaul University. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago. His interests include Early Islamic Historiography, Hagiography and Jewish-Muslim Relations.
